VICTORIA – Not so long ago, in a city not so far away named Victoria, a busker named Darth Fiddler ran into some of the "dark side."
The fiddler-playing street performer, who dresses as Darth Vader from the Star Wars films, was roughed up by four men Saturday night near the corner of Government and Wharf Streets.
Police said the men started taunting the busker, then, without warning, tackled him, causing minor injuries and, according to some reports, smashing his fiddle.
News of the incident quickly made the rounds online.
Victoria police spokesman Const. Mike Russell said that on Twitter the hashtags #fiddler and #helpyyjvader were trending higher than tweets for the Vancouver Canucks.
The online campaign prompted Larsen Music shop in Victoria to offer the busker a new violin, valued at $500.
"He’s a customer," said Kanoux Larsen of Larsen Music, refusing to identify Darth Fiddler, saying they thought it best to protect his privacy.
"If he needs (a new fiddle) there is one here waiting for him."
