Flames ownership purchases Roughnecks lacrosse team

CALGARY – After months of speculation, the NHL’s Calgary Flames have purchased the National Lacrosse League’s Calgary Roughnecks from owner and general manager Brad Banister.

The NLL, which wrapped up its 10th season in Calgary, has always been a tenant of the National Hockey League club at the Saddledome.

Over the past few years, the Roughnecks’ attendance hovered between 10,000 to 12,000 fans.

Now, the Roughnecks sit safely tucked under the Flames’ ownership umbrella, which also includes the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen.

It’s a common scenario in the NLL.

Kroenke Sports Enterprises, owners of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, also owns the Colorado Mammoth. The Buffalo Sabres own the Buffalo Bandits, and the Rochester Knighthawks are part of the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans ownership group.

Mike Board, who had been on the Flames’ payroll as the NHL team’s digital content director, is the Roughnecks’ new general manager.
