Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops is set for a major expansion of its trail system and changes to its hotel.

Additional trails for both winter and summer recreational activities will be expanded this spring in the West Morrisey and Gil’s area, growing skiable terrain to 4,200 acres in time for the next season.

The existing Delta Sun Peaks Resort is changing its name to Sun Peaks Grand Hotel and Conference Centre in May. Existing ownership and employees at the hotel will not change, however the resort will not be operated by Delta Hotels and Resorts any longer.

Sun Peaks Grand will be managed by a local company. All changes were announced to staff Tuesday.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to manage and operate the resort’s signature hotel locally and better integrate it into our ongoing development and resort operations,” said Darcy Alexander, VP and GM of Sun Peaks Resort.

Sun Peaks Resort has grown significantly in the 50 years it has been in operation. Located 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops, it is the largest year-round destination resort in B.C.’s interior.

“Sun Peaks has emerged as one of Canada’s must-ski resorts, and knowing that we’re building on our considerable success with local management and ownership of the Grand, as well as new runs, is an important signal to everyone, both here at Sun Peaks and in key visitor markets, that we’re adding even more value to our resort guests’ experience,” said Nancy Greene, director of skiing at Sun Peaks.
