Claude Larouche found guilty of first-degree murder

Montreal’s Claude Larouche was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Natasha Cournoyer.

The verdict was handed down Thursday morning.

Larouche, a 49-year-old carpenter, will serve a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Cournoyer was killed on Oct. 1, 2009, after being sexually assaulted by Larouche.

The murderer testified he had been high on crack and cocaine the night she died.

"Cocaine does bizarre things to you," he told the eight-man, four-woman jury earlier in the trial.

Defence lawyer Richard Rougeau had argued Larouche had no intent to kill Cournoyer.

More to come.
