LEAMINGTON, Ont. – Environment Canada investigators are travelling to Leamington and Kingsville, in southwestern Ontario, to examine storm damage in the area.
The agency’s Geoff Coulson says weather instruments show wind gusts of no more than 60 kilometres an hour Tuesday night, but he expects localized gusts topped 90 km/h.
Several trees were toppled in both communities, with some landing on homes.
Coulson says they’ve heard the worst damage appears to be around the Graham Sideroad area, east of Kingsville.
Hydro One has spent the day reconnecting power to about 2,000 customers who lost their electricity in the area.
Less than 400 customers remain without power, with most service restored in the Leamington area.
"The investigators will be looking to see if the damage is chaotic, very narrow," Coulson said. "The trees and other damage would be folded on top of each other (if it was a tornado)."
The other possibility is a downburst which can cause sudden, severe winds.
