EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach has made his resignation official.
Stelmach has sent a letter to the president of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta.
Stelmach, who announced in January that he would step down, says in the letter he will leave Oct. 1.
He says he is grateful for the chance to lead Alberta through what he calls "a difficult period."
Party president Bill Smith says the race to replace Stelmach is now formally under way and the first round of voting will be Sept. 17.
Six people have already said they are interested in the job.
