UPDATE: Train strikes truck driving on tracks near Sicamous

UPDATE:  The driver of the truck was air lifted to the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops with undetermined injuries. “The early stages of the investigation indicate the truck was initially travelling eastbound on Highway 1 when it left the roadway and became lodged on the tracks. The train crew was able to apply the brakes thereby slowing it down considerably prior to the impact,” according to an RCMP press release. An investigation is now being conducted, led by the Canadian Pacific Police based in Revelstoke. 

SICAMOUS, B.C. — RCMP are investigating an accident in Sicamous involving a Canadian Pacific train and a truck, with a man said to be in critical condition.

The accident took place just after 3 P.M. near Solsqua Road at Highway 1, the Trans Canada Highway.

A witness says it appears the truck was driving along the tracks, eastbound, when it was struck by the train which was also travelling east.

CP crews attend to a truck that was struck by the train near Sicamous Tuesday afternoon.

Neil Russell, a nearby resident, says the back end of the vehicle is crushed and a person was inside the cab.

An ambulance and air ambulance is on scene, with one patient being attended to by paramedics with the BC Ambulance Service. The man’s injuries are said to be critical or even serious.

Traffic was diverted around the accident area, which is right next to Highway 1.

RCMP remain at the scene and have not released any information about the incident.
