CALGARY – After more than four years of negotiation, the University of Calgary and the Military Museums have acquired an archive deemed to be a “national treasure.”
The Chicksands collection contains more than 60,000 military books, drawings and maps that document military exploits between the 1700s and the 1970s. It is named after the British military base and Cold War listening post in the ancient priory of Bedfordshire near London.

The collection includes priceless and rare accounts from wars ranging from the American Civil War, to letters from soldiers who fought on the Plains of Abraham.
A reception to celebrate the arrival of the documents will be held later Wednesday.
