John Tobin pleads guilty to impaired driving causing death

OTTAWA – John Tobin, son of former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin, pleaded guilty in an Ottawa courtroom Tuesday to impaired driving causing death.

Tobin, who goes by "Jack," ran over his friend Alex Zolpis on the roof of a parking garage in Ottawa’s Byward Market in the early hours of Christmas Eve while driving a rented pickup truck.

In a brief hearing, his lawyer Norm Boxall admitted that Tobin was over the legal blood-alcohol level at the time of the incident and asked for a pre-sentencing report that will be presented to the court on Aug. 4.

The 24-year-old Tobin appeared in court flanked by his parents.

An assistant Crown attorney said he would be seeking a "substantial jail term."
