City asks for another week in airport tunnel talks

CALGARY – City officials want one more week to try striking a deal on the airport tunnel, delaying yet again a final decision on the $295-million northeast project.

At one of the latest meetings with the airport authority, its leaders made an offer with undisclosed new terms, according to a report released Monday morning.

The city is determining whether these new conditions can be reached for the amount council approved in an 8-7 vote in February. However, it appears the latest offer could be a budget buster.

“Furthermore a request has been made to the province seeking financial assistance in meeting these new conditions,” the report says.

Council will discuss these conditions in private later Monday.

The airport authority has reportedly dropped several of its initial demands regarding land fees and liabilities in months of negotiations over an Airport Trail extension that would cut beneath a new runway.

More to come …
