Boil water order now over in Lethbridge and surrounding areas

LETHBRIDGE – The City of Lethbridge says they are no longer in a state of local emergency, and a boil water order put in place earlier this week has been lifted.

Officials made the announcement on Friday at noon.

A boil water order was issued on Wednesday, over concerns of high turbidity in the Old Man River. Officials blamed the river’s state on the recent melt, and said it was becoming difficult to treat at the water treatment plant.

They asked residents to only use water for essential uses such as cooking and drinking, and to stop activities like washing cars or sidewalks.

Hours later, officials declared a local state of emergency due to a critical water storage.

On Friday, officials held a news conference to confirm that water quality had returned to satisfactory levels for the City of Lethbridge, and for the towns of Picture Butte, Coaldale and Coalhurst; and the County of Lethbridge.

Director of Infrastructure Service with the City of Lethbridge Doug Hawkins says water reserves have been mostly restored, and they are now able to meet the fire protection needs of the community.

He adds that Chinook Regional Hospital, Piyami Health Centre in Picture Butte and Coaldale Health Centre will be returning to normal operations.

Although officials say water is again drinkable and no longer restricted, they still ask people restrict their usage somewhat until Saturday.

Lethbridge residents may still notice a different taste or odour in their drinking water.
