FREDERICTON – The Emergency Measures Organization in New Brunswick has issued a flood warning for people living in low-lying areas along the St. John River.

EMO director Andy Morton says the river is expected to reach or exceed flood levels in the Clair and Saint-Hilaire areas in the upper river and in the Fredericton and Jemseg areas in the lower river basin over the next few days.

He says anyone living in flood-prone areas should take precautions such as moving valuables out of their basements and securing loose objects such as lawn furniture in their yards.

Karl Wilmot, the manager of the province’s flood forecast centre, says snow that fell in northern New Brunswick, Maine and Quebec is now melting and flowing into the St. John river system.

Morton says the river basin is full, and any heavy rain next week could result in more flooding.
