A Soldier’s Story: Marking the end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan

EDMONTON – Wednesday marks the official end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

For the past 12 years, Canadian soldiers have been sent overseas to try to bring stability to the war-torn region.

In the days leading up to the official end of the mission, Global News brought viewers a special series called ‘A Soldier’s Story.’

In part one of the series, Vinesh Pratap spoke with Major Sandy Cooper, an Edmonton-based soldier who served in Afghanistan from March 2009 to October 2009. Cooper speaks about working with Afghans and what Canadians can take away from the 12-year mission.

In part two, Cooper speaks about a life-changing experience that happened at home while he was half a world away.

In part three of the series, Sergeant Sebastian Pinard shares his story. Pinard joined the Canadian Military on the morning of September 11, 2001, not knowing at the time the world was changing.

In the fourth and final installment of the series, Cpl. Tanya Woito shares her story about how while on mission it’s not just about the work. It’s also about taking time to bring a sense of normalcy to life.
