Regina police arrest suspect charged with copper wire theft

A man was arrested after Regina police say he entered a property and stole copper wire early Monday morning.

Regina police, with help from the Aerial Support Unit (ASU), spotted a suspicious vehicle and suspect around 1 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of Winnipeg Street, the service said in a news release.

The ASU continued to monitor him “as he moved through several nearby properties,” police said. More than an hour later, around 2:30 a.m., the 50-year-old suspect parked the vehicle on 2nd Avenue North, by Quebec Street, before returning to a Winnipeg Street property, police said.

Shortly after, the aerial team saw the man enter a compound and remove copper wire, according to police, who said the man was arrested as he left.

Following his arrest, officers also found a pair of wire cutters, police added.

The 50-year-old man is facing charges of break and enter with intent and possession of break-in instruments.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 1 in Regina provincial court.
