TORONTO – A doctor who specializes in evaluating child maltreatment has been named Ontario’s new chief coroner.
Dr. Dirk Huyer takes over the top job after acting as the interim chief coroner since July 2013.
The province says he has investigated more than 5,000 deaths since becoming a coroner in 1992.

He rose through the ranks as regional supervising coroner for the regions of Peel and Halton, as well as the counties of Simcoe and Wellington, before joining the chief coroner’s office in 2008.
The province says Huyer has expertise in medical evaluation of child maltreatment and has worked with a suspected child abuse and neglect program at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.
Huyer is also an assistant professor with the pediatrics department at the University of Toronto medical school.
The chief coroner’s office investigates about 16,000 deaths each year.
