CN Rail has now begun a major cleanup of coal, which spilled into a fish bearing creek in Burnaby.
More than 80 cubic metres of coal is believed to have fallen into the water in mid-January when a CN Train derailed.
The coal went into Silver Creek, and was then carried downstream to Burnaby Lake. The cleanup had to wait for an environmental plan to be created, to protect fish and turtle habitat.
High water flows in recent weeks also delayed the project.
CN is not commenting on the cost of the cleanup, which is expected to take several weeks.
