Edmonton shoppers give big love to Apple Store

Edmonton’s highest-rated retailer is The Apple Store, while Canadian Tire is the most shopped, according to a new national survey.

According to the 15th annual KubasPrimedia Major Market Retail Report, The Apple Store earned top marks among retail stores in Edmonton with an average score of 63.1 out of 100.

Consumers ranked The Apple Store first in customer service, first in merchandise quality, and second in store layout and decor, but tied for last place in value for money.

Ratings were based on a five-point scale translated to a score out of 100.

The Apple Store was followed by Chapters (59.9); Birks (59.1); Holt Renfrew (59); and The Body Shop (58.4) among top-rated retailers found in Edmonton.

In the most-shopped category – which refers to the percentage of consumers who shopped at a store in the last year at least rarely – Canadian Tire scored the highest in Edmonton with 92.0.

It was followed by Shoppers Drug Mart (91.3); Staples (89.0); Walmart (88.6); and Zellers (86.2).

The findings were based on surveys of 1,520 Canadians in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal and 147 retailers.

The Apple Store was also Canada’s highest rated retailer, followed by Lowe’s, La Maison Simons, Jean Coutu and Holt Renfrew.

“We estimate the top six Canadian markets will generate a projected $223 billion in retail sales in 2011, or about 49 per cent of the national total of $460 billion,” said Ed Strapagiel, executive vice-president of KubasPrimedia, a marketing consulting firm, in a release.

“Despite these big numbers, retailers have to pay close attention to their competitive position in the marketplace because retail is growing only modestly and waves of new competitors are moving in to Canada from the U.S.”
