Voluntary evacuation underway in High River

CALGARY – Voluntary evacuation is now underway for residents in parts of High River.

Rising waters have led to low-level flooding along the Highwood River, prompting Officials to declare a state of emergency last night around 9:20 p.m. Sandbagging has started in the community of Wallaceville along the Highwood River, where voluntary evacuation is in place. Several lots at the George Lane Park Camp Ground are also under voluntary evacuation.

The Highwood Highschool has been opened up to residents choosing to evacuate their homes and an emergency operations centre is now open at the town hall. Space is being made for animals at the Heaven Can Wait Rescue Centre.

There is no word yet on how many people have chosen to leave their homes, if any.
