Calgary Police perform commercial vehicle check stops

CALGARY – The Calgary Police Truck Unit along with several municipal, provincial and federal agencies were pulling over trucks and other commercial vehicles on Glenmore Trail on Tuesday as part of their annual commercial vehicle checkstop.

Inspectors were looking for a wide range of infractions from mechanical defects like faulty breaks to improperly secured loads.

Officials say an unreasonable amount of vehicles typically fail the inspections and have to be taken out of service immediately.

“The out of service rate, which I guess you’d classify as a fail rate, is between 33 and 38 per cent of the vehicles that we check,” says A/Sgt. Derek Emmot.

“In the last few years we’ve done up to 550 checks in a three day period so that’s quite a few trucks out of service.”

The check stops continue Wednesday and Thursday.

Police will release results later in the week.
