A 24-year-old man is in custody and is facing multiple charges following a carjacking in Edmonton Thursday that left an elderly woman with minor injuries.

The 76-year-old woman was loading groceries into her car at the Mill Woods Town Centre when a man jumped into her car and drove away. The woman was examined by paramedics but did not require treatment.

Several hours later RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision on Hwy. 1 just east of Lake Louise. The vehicle had gone off the road and rolled into the ditch.

By the time emergency crews had arrived, several witnesses had pulled the lone male occupant out of the vehicle and administered first aid.

Investigators subsequently determined that the vehicle was the same one that had been stolen in Edmonton earlier in the day.

A 24-year-old Westlock man is now facing charges of robbery, possession of stolen property and numerous traffic related offenses. The suspects name is being withheld until formal charges are laid.
