Improving Manitoba’s provincial parks

Grand Beach Provincial Park is in the midst of a major makeover, designed to improve the popular beach destination for Manitoba families and visitors.

"Grand Beach is a natural jewel that attracts thousands of families each year," Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie said in a recent release, "Our investments will improve the area for cottage owners, campers and visitors, and will help Manitobans enjoy our fantastic summers."

The Grand Beach makeover is just one part of the current government’s plan to inest $100 million in provincial parts over the next five years.

Located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, Grand Beach is a very popular freshwater beach, drawing an estimated 400,000 visitors each year. But in the fall of 2010, a major storm destroyed the boardwalk, accessible ramp and the beach safety office. Construction is now underway to create a new and improved boardwalk, at a cost of approximately $2.7 million, and once that work is completed, further improvements will be made in two additional phases.

The second phase will be a boardwalk extension to an additional plaza space, permanent umbrella shade structures, additional seating, picnic areas and planting, as well as better access to the beach and improvements to volleyball court surfacing and lighting. The final phase will feature park upgrades, including road repairs, campsite enhancements and waste-water treatment upgrades.

The approximate cost for all repairs and improvements at Grand Beach is pegged at $10.5 million.
