Wildfires burn near Fort McMurray, Fort McKay

Areas of northern Alberta remained smothered in smoke Friday, as four wildfires continued to burn and the wildfire hazard remained extreme.

The largest of the fires (207,400 hectares) is burning in the Richardson back country along the Athabasca river. The fire is classified as out of control and crews continue to work to maintain fire guards on the west and south edges of the fire.

Another large fire (8,900 hectares) is burning north of Fort McKay. That fire is also classified as out of control, though the southern edge of the fire (closest to Fort Mckay) is showing little fire activity. However, the northern edge of the fire remains very active and crews are working to reinforce fire guards.

A 4,300 hectare fire east of Fort Hills is now being held.

A 100 hectare fire burning 17 km north of Fort McMurray is still burning but is classified as under control.

There are approximately 430 people contributing to firefighting efforts in the area.

Northern residents are being advised that northeast winds are blowing smoke from these fires into Fort McKay, Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. Anyone with health related concerns is asked to contact Alberta Health Services.
