After an intense morning and afternoon, Search and Recovery personnel have recovered a body from the murky waters of Sturgeon Creek.
Police believe it’s the body of a young man who drowned after he fell into the fast-moving waters yesterday afternoon, just west of the Woodhaven Bridge. But it’s still a mystery as to who the person is.
Divers entered the waterway on Wednesday morning, looking for a young man who reportedly fell into the swollen creek on Tuesday afternoon. At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, they pulled a body from the water.
Emergency response teams were on scene yesterday afternoon, searching for a teenager after witnesses reported seeing someone in the water at around 2:45 p.m. Officials say they recovered a red backpack at the scene, and that the witness threw a life preserver into the water to try and help, but couldn’t reach the boy.
Officials called off rescue efforts after almost two hours of searching the creek, and Winnipeg Police shifted into recovery mode this morning, sending divers from their Search and Recovery Unit into the water to look for a body.
They have not received any reports of missing teenagers, and are unsure if the victim is male or female.
Sturgeon Creek is a tributary of the Assiniboine River, and is particularly high as the river is near crest.
During the Province’s flood news conference on Wednesday afternoon, Emergency Measures Minister Steve Ashton also issued a warning for people to show "extreme caution" in areas around Winnipeg waterways.
"There are very trecherous conditions, very muddy conditions and the flows and those areas are very intense," Ashton said.
