In the hours of television coverage of any election – and the 2011 Canadian election is no exception – there is a highlight. A moment, where what is happening on the television screen literally jumps out at the viewer sitting in their living room.
Perhaps the video shown here is that moment for the election held in Canada on May 2nd.
The Global News video shows reporter Sean O’Shea interviewing a supporter of Conservative candidate Parm Gill in Brampton-Springdale. Gill ultimately defeated rival Liberal Ruby Dhalla to capture the riding just north of Toronto.
The headquarters for Brampton-Springdale was clearly a very loud room, and O’Shea had the benefit of headphones, while the Parm Gill supporter did not – hence the yelling; something the supporter likely felt he had to do to be heard about the noise of the room. However – because the mic was so close that yelling stood out for those on the receiving end in their living rooms.
Regardless, what was perhaps even more startling was not how he said it, but what he said. The Tory supporter, reportedly a former Liberal, dismissed Michael Ignatieff, and used his 15 seconds of fame to yell, “Harper you are a real man with a real plan.”
Conservative leader Stephen Harper visited Brampton three times during the 2011 election – clearly those visits had an impact.
