Little used TransLink park and ride “wins” award for taxpayer waste

TransLink has won an award from the Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation they’d rather not have.

The organization received the “Local Teddy” government waste award for a “Park n’ Ride” in South Surrey the government spent $4.5 million to build, but is rarely used.

“Vancouver’s accident and waste-prone regional transit authority (TransLink) stepped in it once again this past year, shelling out $4.5 million for a parking lot with a $2 toll that nobody ever uses,” said the CTF in announcing the award.

The South Surrey parking lot has a $2 daily fee, which commuters chose not to use, opting instead for local sidestreets.

In January, TransLink told Global News that it was too early to tell if commuters will accept paid parking, and were not planning any changes.

The CTF gives out “Teddies” every year in honour of Ted Weatherill, a former federal appointee who was fired in 1999 for dubious expense claims, including a $700 lunch for two.
