Manitoba Ridings To Watch: Winnipeg South

Overview

Conservative MP Rod Bruinooge has held this riding since 2006, when he defeated Liberal candidate Reg Alcook, ending a four-term winning streak for the Liberals by a mere 111 votes. He had lost to Alcook previously in the 2004 election by 6,500 votes. In the 2008 election, Bruinooge again defeated a Liberal candidate, John Leowen, but this time by a much larger margin: 5,835 votes.

Winnipeg South is home to 84,424 people, and 20 per cent of the population are immigrants. French is the first language of five per cent of the population, while three per cent say Chinese is their primary language. The average family income is $93,817, which is the second highest in the province, and 35 per cent of residents hold a university degree and are over the age of 25. Health care, social services and the retail trade are the top employers in this riding, and the unemployment rate is 4.5 per cent.

Candidate Profiles

Rod Bruinooge – Conservative

Bruinooge has been a Member of Parliament since 2006, and is a member of the Standing Committee of Canadian Heritage. In 2009, he founded the Conservative Post-Secondary Education Caucus and was elected as chair. Prior to entering politics, Bruinooge was an entrepreneur working in the film and gaming industries. In 1997, he launched the internet game “The Stone” which earned him international recognition and a feature in Forbes magazine.

Terry Duguid – Liberal

Duguid is a biologist with a Masters degree in environmental science. After the SARS outbreak, he co-wrote a report recommending the creation of the International Centre for Infectious Disease. Duguid was a Winnipeg city councillor from 1989 to 1995, and had a career as a leader and executive in the non-for-profit sector. He ran as a Liberal candidate in both the 2004 and 2006 elections in the Kildonan/St. Paul riding, but lost.

Dave Gaudreau – NDP

Gaudreau is a welder for the City of Winnipeg and an active member in his union, CUPE Local 500. He became active in the union and has taken on various roles and responsibilities, including the elected position of Warden on the Local Union’s Executive. He has also chaired the union’s Social and Sports Committee, and organized events that raised thousands of dollars to help community organizations like women’s shelters.

Caitlin McIntyre – Green

After graduating from university, McIntyre launched an independent business with two business partners called Wheely Green, an ecologically-friendly marketing company. She currently works as an administrator at a Winnipeg-based speciality insurance firm. She also serves as the Secretary of the Green Party of Manitoba.
