Port container truck drivers protest in Delta

Container truckers serving Port Metro Vancouver pulled their services Wednesday morning.

The truckers claim long lineups, rising costs, and low haulage rates are making it impossible for them to earn a decent living.

The United Truckers Association organized a protest Wednesday morning near Highway 91 in Delta.

“We’ve seen this story before, too many times. Truckers shut down the Vancouver ports in 1999 and 2005 because government and the ports wouldn’t listen,” said Paul Johal, President of Unifor-Vancouver Container Truckers’ Association. “Container truckers are tired of lip-service and demand real changes and real solutions.”

Up to 1,400 trucks were pulled off the road.

“We’re calling on both levels of government and the port authorities to sit down and work with truckers towards a real solution,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor B.C. Area Director. “Organized action by truckers can be very disruptive to the Port’s viability as a centre for stable trade.”

Port Metro Vancouver says the protest won’t affect operations. The Port is calling for the truckers to return to the negotiating table.
