Watch the video above: former Rider Graig Newman explains his decision to sign with the Bombers
SASKATOON – In two CFL seasons, Graig Newman made a name for himself on the Saskatchewan Roughriders special teams unit.
When free agency opened, the lure to become a starter on defense led Newman to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
“Everything is going to have to be earned,” Newman says of his chances on landing a starting gig with the Bombers.

“As an athlete you always strive to progress and be better and constantly want more from yourself.”
Newman was originally a territorial exemption pick of the Riders in 2011 after playing junior football with the Hilltops. He says he’s learned a lot from his time with the Green and White.
“I’ve taken a lot from my two years with them. I’ve had some great coaches and great experiences. I have progressed quite a bit as a special teams player, but I think now the next step is to progress as a defensive player”
Usually free agents from Saskatchewan come home to the Riders. Newman is bucking the trend, as he now embarks on the next chapter of his football life, down the road in Winnipeg.
“For a kid from Saskatchewan getting to play with the Roughriders and then finish it off the way I did, I mean, it couldn’t have worked out any better,” Newman said.
“I’m super proud of what I did in Saskatchewan but you know I’m also very excited to see what new opportunities will arise with the Blue Bombers.”
