HUMBOLDT, Sask. – An inquest will be held into three deaths that happen at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.
The deaths happened after a carbon monoxide leak caused by a faulty boiler at the long-term care home on Dec. 26, 2010. One person died immediately after the leak and two others passed away in the following weeks.
Dozens of other residents, staff and visitors became sick from CO poisoning.
Immediately after the leak, the Ministry of Health directed all health regions to develop plans for the appropriate installation of CO detectors in every health region in the province.
A report into the leak found contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Saskatoon Health Region pleaded guilty to two code violations and was fined $154,000.
The region admitted it failed to ensure workers were properly trained on boiler and ventilation systems and failed to arrange regular inspections.
The public inquest will be held from March 3-7 at the Humboldt Uniplex and is headed up by Alma Wiebe.
During the inquest, the coroner’s jury will hear details surrounding the events that led to the deaths and could make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
