SCOTT, Sask. – The Saskatchewan SPCA is pressing charges against a Scott area farmer after officials found dead horses on the property.
Four out of the 80 horses on the land were removed and taken to rescue stables and more could be seized.
“Any further seizures are going to be dependent on the vet,” said Kaley Pugh, spokesperson for the Saskatchewan SPCA. “Generally when we seize livestock it’s on the recommendation of a veterinarian who believes there is no other way to relieve the animal of their distress.”
“There’s certainly some more out there I’m concerned about, but whether or not they need to be seized at this point is not my determination,” Pugh said.
She says they often hear complaints about horse well-being in the province. In January alone, the Saskatchewan SPCA received 29 horse related complaints.
In 2013, the agency removed 53 horses in nine separate cases around the province.
