SASKATOON – Temperatures are on the rise in into the weekend, but as warm moist air slides in over the cold, dense air that’s been sitting over Saskatoon for weeks, it squeezes out its moisture over top of us.
One of the main features responsible for the sudden influx of heat and snow is a powerful stream of moisture known as the Pineapple Express that originates near Hawaii.
When the flow of moist air makes landfall along the British Columbia coast, it dumps heavy precipitation across the region, some of which spills into the neighbouring prairie provinces.
Essentially what the Pineapple Express does when it makes landfall in B.C. is it pulls the track of low pressure systems further north, which brings in the cloud cover, precipitation, strong winds and warmer temperatures.

It’s effect on Saskatoon this time round will be some heavier impulses of snow along with a continued gradual warming of temperatures over the next several days.

A fairly sizeable dump of snow is expected Wednesday in Saskatoon, with four to eight centimetres possible by the end of the day.
Locally, higher amounts upwards of 10 cm may be possible, which could be further enhanced through drifting and blowing snow.
Along with tomorrow’s snow-making system will come strong wind gusts, reducing visibility on roads.
