Tired of the cold? Some relief in sight

Temperatures look to be rising by the beginning of next week. Global News

TORONTO – In a city that is used to seeing the ups and downs of winter weather, this winter freeze that’s taken hold of Toronto has been a bit hard to take. However, take heart: there are some closer to average temperatures heading our way.

The next two days will still be chilly, but it’s next week that looks promising.

Finally, after two months of well-below seasonal temperatures, the mercury will be closer to where it should be this time of year, beginning on Monday.

Next week, temperatures will be closer to the seasonal daytime high of -1 C, which will come as a relief after facing days of subzero temperatures, mostly brought on in January due to the polar vortex dipping farther south than it normally does.

And why has this winter seemed colder than normal? Toronto hasn’t received the above-zero temperatures that are typical for our city: We’ve only had 23 of those days this season since Dec. 1. Last year’s total for the same time period was 55. As well, one just needs to look at our temperature: the daily average temperature for January is -6.3 C. But this January’s daily average temperature was -8.6 C.

That average is due in part to the extreme lows we’ve had, too. On average, January sees about 2.5 days of lows of -20 C or below. Last month we had eight days. In December we had 12 days below -10 C; the average is 7 days.

So just think: Warmer days are ahead. Even if “warmer” means just closer to -1 C.
