CFL team for Halifax a good idea but still years away: commissioner

HALIFAX – The mayor of Halifax and the CFL’s commissioner met Monday to discuss the league’s future in the city, but both say a team actually taking the field is a long way from reality.

Mayor Mike Savage says the city should have its own mixed-use stadium and he likes the idea of a CFL team as its anchor tenant.

But he says discussions with the league and potential investors are just starting.

Savage met with CFL commissioner Mark Cohon in Halifax and declined to discuss timelines or the degree of interest from the private sector or other levels of government, which has sunk previous bids.

Cohon says establishing a team in Halifax is part of the league’s long-term plan.

He declined to name any of the national or local business leaders that he and the mayor are talking to.

The commissioner repeatedly pointed to the new franchise in Ottawa as a potential model for Halifax.

But he says the talks that led to that team’s rebirth took seven years to come to fruition.
