Halifax mayor to meet with CFL commissioner Monday

HALIFAX – Talks on Halifax getting its own CFL franchise are moving a step forward: the mayor and the CFL commissioner will meet Monday.

The municipality has been lobbying for its own team for several years now but one thing standing in the way is the lack of a stadium.

Mayor Mike Savage said a stadium could go a long way for the municipality.

“To me, it’s a missing piece of infrastructure for a city like Halifax,” he said.

“I think it would be great for economic development. I think it would bring opportunity to this city culturally, musically and economically. At the very least we should have the discussion. We can sit around and not do anything about it or we can start the conversation.”

However, one city councillor said it’s important for Monday’s meeting to clarify what would be required.

“What I’m hoping to get is what are the real requirements in terms of size, the facility, the number of seats,” said councillor Waye Mason.

“Whether or not we can have a commitment from the CFL that a team is coming here, or at least they are committed to if we build a stadium, before we build a stadium.”

Savage said the next step after the meeting with commissioner Mark Cohon will be discussions with council about how, and if, the municipality should move forward.
