Students learn basics thanks to the Olympics

A Winnipeg school is using the Olympics to teach elementary students math, social studies and geography.

“We’re going to be doing research projects, look at different countries participating and plotting them on a map,” said Les Chaszewski, a grade 4 teacher at Tyndall Park Community School.

He said timed events are perfect for teaching decimals and cumulative scores can show how to add as well.

His students have already looked at the ratio of a country’s population to the number of athletes it has at the games.

“It feels like we are watching people that are finally getting their dreams,” said Carley Szydick, a grade 4 student in the class.

Down the hall, a grade 1 class is learning how to make predictions for this year’s medal count based on previous years.

“It is so much more authentic than just giving them a worksheet,” Chaszewski said.

The school plans to show as much of the Olympics as possible during the classes while working the games into the curriculum.
