OTTAWA – The unemployment rate in Saskatchewan rose in January but still remains the lowest of any province in Canada.

Statistics Canada reported on Friday the province’s unemployment rate was 4.3 per cent, up 0.4 percentage points from December.

Employment in the province fell by 2,600 people, with all losses coming in part-time work. Full-time employment was up 4.8 per cent to 462,300 jobs and on a year-over-year basis, was up 9.2 per cent.

Saskatoon tied Quebec City for the lowest unemployment rate for major cities at 4.3 per cent while Regina’s rate was 4.4 per cent.

StatsCan cautions figures in cities may fluctuate widely due to a small statistical sample.

The national unemployment rate dipped 0.2 percentage points to sit at 7.0 per cent after 29,000 jobs were added to the economy.
