Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in the southern hemisphere, Brazil baked in sweltering heat.

Rio de Janeiro faced a daytime high of 40 C on Wednesday, and many tried to head to the sandy shores of Copacabana and Ipanema for some relief.

Records had already been broken on Tuesday, when the mercury climbed to 40.8 C, making it the hottest day of the year so far. Making it worse was a blackout that lasted about 40 minutes. More than two million people across 11 states were affected.

“With 40 degrees celsius, it’s unbearable,” said Monicledison Carneiro, a Rio lawyer. “The government has to be prepared, because on the hottest day of the year we had a blackout. This cannot happen. I suffered yesterday.”

Water reserves and hydroelectric dams are also at a record low in Sao Paulo state.
