Canada’s Spencer O’Brien advances to Sochi slopestyle snowboard final

Snowboarder Spencer O’Brien, from Courtenay, B.C., has advanced to the women’s slopestyle final.

She got third place in her heat, with a score of 82.75. First place in the heat went to Switzerland’s Isabel Derungs, who received a score of 87.50.

The best overall run was from Austria’s Anna Gasser, who scored 95.50 in the second heat.

There are two heats in the women’s slopestyle event. The top four competitors in each heat advance directly to the finals.

Jenna Blasman, from Kitchener, Ont., did not qualify for automatic advancement to the women’s final, as her best run scored only 60.25. But she has another chance to advance: If she scores in the top four in the semifinals, she can compete in the final alongside O’Brien.

The women’s semifinals begin Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1:30 a.m. Eastern (10:30 Pacific). The finals are later that day, at 4:15 a.m. Eastern time (1:15 Pacific).

Canada’s men’s snowboarders also had a good day on the slopes. Maxence Parrot and Sebastien Toutant advanced to the finals in the men’s competition. Mark McMorris will compete in the semifinals.
