TORONTO – Art is often considered an illustration of creativity but more and more hospitals have taken the concept one step further by using it to heal patients.

The Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s walls and hallways are adorned with paintings depicting nature – with sculptures that even come from natural materials like stone and wood.

“It’s really a non-verbal way to communicate, a visual way to communicate that promotes well being. So the physical environment can also promote calmness, reduce anxiety,” said Arts Animator and Program Coordinator Shannon Crossman.

Studies suggest pieces of art also help as a distraction for patients dealing with various forms of illnesses.

“What you’re looking at, what you’re touching on surfaces, is actually all very important to people and we need to start thinking of that the same way we think about your next chemotherapy regiment” said Dr. Michal Gardam, Director of Infection Prevention and Control from the University Health Network.

Many of the art pieces are usually acquired through donations.

But no matter where they come from, they are often appreciated by young and old alike.

“When I look at it…it comes to life so I can like hear the kids playing and laughing,” said Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital patient Emma Hill.
