It may be hard to believe but everyone’s favourite starship commander has turned the big 8-0. Montreal-born William Shatner is best known for his classic portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in the science fiction television show, “Star Trek: The Original Series.” The man who saved the galaxy countless of times on TV also starred in the franchise’s first seven films and voiced Kirk in the animated “Star Trek” series.
But Shatner’s memorable career moments extend beyond his depiction as a culture icon for Trekkies-somewhat. Global News takes a look at some Shatner career classics:
Shatner covers Cee-Lo
Ooo, ooo, ooo. There are words you cannot say on television unless, of course, your name is William Shatner. The national treasure covered Cee-Lo Green’s smash hit, “˜F**k you’ on comedian’s George Lopez’ tonight show. Watch the video clip below.
The kiss
Known for his love of the ladies, Captain Kirk shared what is thought to be the first interracial smooch on American television with Lieutenant Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols. The episode originally aired on November 22, 1968 and is deemed as one of the most well-known “Star Trek” moments.
Shatner poetry slams Palin
Sarah Palin’s memorable farewell speech as governor of Alaska baffled many-except Conan O’Brien. On July 27, 2009, the American host and comedian invited Shatner to perform Palin’s speech as poetry on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” The segment was an instant hit and, five months later, Shatner returned to perform some of what many deemed as Palin’s incoherent Twitter tweets.
And I think it’s gonna be a long, long time…
Sure, Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids but Shatner’s interpretation of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” is still-wait for it-out of this world. Shatner’s performance at the 1978 Science Fiction Film Awards was pure Shatner awesomeness. Check out the video clip below.
Khaaan!
Captain Kirk’s declaration of rage in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” made its way from the television screen and onto mugs and T-shirts. Kirk’s exaggeration of the word “˜Khan’ delighted Trekkies and non-Trekkies everywhere for its catchiness and ability to quickly exasperate others if repeated continuously.
No Blah! Blah! Blah!
Although not always noted as one of the most memorable Kirk moments, the Captain’s exasperated “˜No Blah! Blah! Blah’ in the eighth episode of the first season original “Star Trek” television series just sounds really important.
