Non-profit groups rebuilding from flood get help from province

CALGARY- Non-profit groups and arts organizations damaged in the June flood are getting a much needed financial boost.

The province will spend $4.2 million over the next two years to support non-profit and arts groups in their ongoing rebuilding efforts.

“I think there will be more needed,” says Sue Tomney of the YWCA. “But this is the right time to make this type of investment and we’re very grateful and welcome this kind of support.”

Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk calls it a small step forward and says the cash applies to uninsured losses not covered by the disaster recovery program.

The money can’t come soon enough for the Stride Art Gallery in Calgary.

The flood forced the gallery from its Macleod Trail location and damaged or destroyed art, archives, catalogs and equipment.

“It was pretty catastrophic for us; it was something really unprecedented,” says Larissa Tiggelers. “We’ve had to postpone exhibitions and cut back, just based on space.”

Klimchuk says some of the funding will be available this year.
