CBE says decision to move Spanish bilingual program not final yet

CALGARY- Parents opposed to a decision to by the public school board to move a Spanish bilingual program from Westgate School to Eugene Coste School have won a reprieve.

After a group of parents appealed the decision to move the kindergarten to Grade 5 Spanish program to Eugene Coste School in September, the Calgary Board of Education has announced the consultation process will continue.

The original decision was made because Westgate School, which not only has the Spanish bilingual program but also a French immersion program, is over capacity.

Parents were upset by the plan, arguing the move to Eugene Coste would mean a much longer bus ride for their children.

They also said they had not been told during the consultation process which school the program would be moving to. The CBE will announce a date soon for the next open house that will look at the options.
