SHERBROOKE, Que. – Quebec’s premier has added his voice to the chorus of condemnation against the National Hockey League.

Jean Charest says NHL team owners need to urgently address hockey violence after an on-ice incident this week that left a Montreal Canadiens player seriously hurt.

The premier says he’s shocked by the level of brutality in the sport and the lack of effort by the league to stop it.

He says team owners need to revisit the on-ice collision that seriously injured Habs forward Max Pacioretty during a game this week.

Pacioretty was discharged from hospital Thursday, two days after being the target of a violent check by Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara that fractured Pacioretty’s vertebra and gave him a concussion.

Montreal police are investigating the hit but the NHL has not penalized Chara.
