Winnipegger faces second-degree murder charge in Osborne homicide

WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of local musician Joshua Bentley, 18, who was assaulted near the Osborne Street Bridge Friday evening.

Mowlid Korane Mohamed, 26, faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, assault and uttering threats.

Bentley, the lead singer for the band Empty Hands, was attacked after he and a 20-year-old friend left a party in Osborne Village, Winnipeg police said.

Mohamed was at the same party but he and two females left before Bentley, police said.

He waited in his vehicle outside the apartment block where the party was held and when Bentley and a friend came out, confronted them and attacked them, police allege.

Bentley sustained extensive trauma to the upper body and the his friend was also injured.

They fled eastward across the bridge, where they were found at about 11:30 p.m. and taken to hospital by paramedics. Bentley later died in hospital; his friend was treated and released.

Mohamed is being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. The Winnipeg police homicide unit continues to investigate.
