Stoughton and McEwen top seeds for Safeway Championship

Jeff Stoughton has won the Manitoba Men’s Curling Championship 10 times over the last 23 years,  but never in Winnipeg.

Stoughton has been a winner in places like Brandon, Dauphin, Steinbach and Portage La Prairie.

He’s  never won in his hometown.

He’ll get that chance as the defending champion and top seed beginning next week as for the first time in 20 years the Safeway Championship returns to Winnipeg from January 29th to February 2nd at MTS IcePlex.

Representing Manitoba at the Brier has become a habit for Stoughton with four of his provincial titles coming in the last five years.

As always looking to knock Stoughton from his curling perch is Mike McEwen and his team of B.J. Neufeld, Matt Wozniak and Denny Neufeld.

From 2010 to 12 the McEwen team were a win away from their first Brier appearance but would be denied twice by Stoughton and then Rob Fowler.

Fowler has been seeded third with Sean Grassie and William Lyburn rounding out the top five.
