UPDATE: Kelowna reporter charged with harassment

Update: In August 2020, The Canadian Press confirmed a charge in relation to the below incident was dismissed against Tieja MacLaughlin in February 2015 under the terms of a plea agreement.

KELOWNA — A Kelowna reporter has been formally charged for allegedly threatening to kill her boyfriend.

Tieja MacLaughlin, 25, made headlines this week when she was jailed in Kennewick, Wash. after she told Jackson Playfair, 19, that he “would be dead by the end of the night.”

The alleged threat was the result of an earlier conversation when Playfair admitted to cheating on MacLaughlin.

According to court documents, Playfair and MacLaughlin had been in a relationship since the summer of 2013.

Playfair plays for the Tri-City Americans.

He informed local law authorities about the threat.

MacLaughlin was initially issued a warning by police to have no contact with Playfair, but the threats allegedly continued.

She was arrested shortly after and was refused bail.

Court documents show that MacLaughlin has been charged with Felony Harassment because she allegedly threatened to cause bodily harm by threatening to kill.

MacLaughlin has worked for various media outlets in Kelowna.

She remains in jail  with bail set at $50,000 and is due back in court Friday.
