Prince Albert police to start carrying stun guns

Saskatoon police use taser on man who resisted arrest in Nutana on Saturday. Global News/ File

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Prince Albert police officers will start arming themselves with conducted energy devices (CED’s) on Friday.

This new development comes after authority was granted to use stun guns by the Saskatchewan Police Commission in January, 2013.

Before deployment, officers receive mandatory training on both the operation of the device and alternatives to using it.

CED’s are an intermediate weapon only meant for situations where there is imminent risk of serious bodily harm.

Whenever used, a supervisor is required to attend the scene and a report is filed. The incident is reviewed by the police service’s use of force committee and reported to the commission.

Saskatoon police began using Tasers in December, 2013 and Regina police plan to start training this year.
