SASKATOON – Extreme cold weather across much of the country has forced 24 blood clinics to cancel their services for much of December and into this new year. As a result, the Canadian Blood Services is calling on the help of Canadians to fill 31,000 appointments before Feb. 1.

“We’ve had a lot of cancelled clinics and because of that we were unable to collect blood and that has created a reduced inventory for blood donations” said Moira Kohlenberg, the community development coordinator with Canadian Blood Services in Saskatoon.

In Saskatchewan, 2,000 appointments still need to be filled with a pressing need for O-negative blood type.

“O-negative is the universal donor.  The blood type can be giving to any person. In case of emergencies, before the hospital has a chance to determine your blood type and if you need blood immediately they would give you O-negative blood,” Kohlenberg said.
