Police believe alcohol may have contributed to fatal collision on Yellowhead Trail

EDMONTON – An 83-year-old man is dead following a single vehicle collision on Yellowhead Trail Friday night.

Police say the man was heading east on the Yellowhead, approaching the off-ramp for Victoria Trail, when he lost control of the SUV he was driving. The vehicle launched into the air, rolled several times and hit the snow bank, police said Saturday.

The collision happened around 11:45 p.m. Friday.

According to police, the elderly driver did not report any injuries, but he was taken to hospital to be examined. While in hospital, the man’s condition deteriorated and he passed away.

Police are now investigating, but believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.

The Edmonton Police Service is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact police at 780-423-4567.

This is Edmonton’s first fatal collision of 2014.
