Police seek teen in fatal shooting

WINNIPEG – Police have released the name and identity of a young offender accused of second-degree murder and attempted murder in a pair of April shootings.

The young man, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, is accused of killing Nigel Dixon, 20, after mistaking Dixon for a gang member.

The court order authorizing the release of his name and description expired on Jan. 20 at 11:59 p.m., after which time the information must not be published. The name and identifying information has been removed from this story.

Dixon and a female friend were walking along the 500 block of Langside Street near downtown Winnipeg when they were approached by a group of people who accused them of being gang members.

Dixon and his friend said they weren’t involved in gangs and walked away.

The two were followed and shot as they tried to get away, police allege, saying their injuries suggest they were fleeing. Sources told Global News Dixon was shot in the back.

Dixon and his friend are not affiliated with any gangs, police said.

Police don’t know where the suspect is and asked media across the country to publicize his description. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
